Scroll Painting
Scroll painting is an art form that has
existed in China and Japan for centuries. Floral, animal,
landscape and social motifs, as well as a short poem or
story, are common in scroll paintings. Use a previously
written Haiku poem, or write a short story about something
that interests you, and incorporate it with a painting of
the motifs described above. Here is what you will need to
make a small scroll painting:
A Haiku poem or short story.
A pictorial theme you wish to paint:
flowers, birds, yourself or a family member.
Paint brushes (small for detail, medium
for painting letters, large for painting your designs).
Black paint (acrylic is best) for
writing letters.
Coloured paints (primary colours of
red, blue, and yellow plus white so you can mix your own
colours)
Containers for paint brushes, water,
and paint.
Two 18 inch long, 1 cm wide rods of
wood which can be found at a hardware store and cut
to size.
String
Scissors
Glue
Painter's Tape
17 x 42 inch piece of off white paper
(the higher the quality, the less your painted letters
and picture will "run". Ask a qualified person at an arts
and crafts store which kind of paper would be best for
this kind of project).
Preparation
Lay the piece of paper flat on a table.
Take the painter's tape and apply it across the top and
bottom of the paper 1 inch down from the edge. Do the
same to the sides of the paper. This will create a smooth
border around the edge and keep your paper in place on
the table.
As you prepare your paint colours, think
about a colour you would like to choose for your background.
As this is your creation, you can make it any colour you
want, but make sure it is light enough so that the picture
you paint, and the letters in your poem or story, show
up nicely on top. Also make sure the paint is a little
lighter in consistency so it will dry faster.
Once your background colour is applied,
you can start thinking about what you would like to paint.
A portion of the scroll is usually reserved for the picture,
and the other for letters.
Once you have finished painting your
scroll and let it dry, remove the painter's tape very
carefully. Fold the glued, back top edge of your scroll
over one of the pieces of wood until it is covered. The
glued edge should just reach under the wood.
Let it set and do the same with the bottom
edge of the scroll and the other piece of wood.
The pieces of wood should stick out a
half an inch on either side of the top and bottom of the
scroll. Tie a length of string, depending on how long
you want the scroll to hang from your wall, to each end
of the top piece of wood.
The length of the string should be at
least 19 inches.
You can now hang your scroll painting
with its original Haiku poem story from your wall by a
nail.
